Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone, is ubiquitous in animals, plants and most bacteria, hence the name ubiquinone. The body can partially produce it, but it also needs to be ingested as part of an adequate diet. Additionally, coenzyme Q10 plays a key factor in contributing to the reproduction of cellular energy by the mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell.
Correspondingly, organs, such as heart, lungs and liver, have a high concentration of coenzyme Q10 to keep up with the immensity of energy consumption.
The overall concentration of ubiquinone diminishes over the course of a lifetime. Older bodies show a change up to 50% less of the coenzyme Q10 concentration, compared to younger individuals.
